Frosty Morning

There are two kinds of people in the world. Those who say "Good Morning, Lord" and those whose say "Good Lord, it's morning". Unfortunately I am one of the latter. I am not .. at... all ... a morning person. I'd much rather be in my cozy warm bed sleeping. Ironically the man I married is totally a morning person. {side note: even when we`re on holidays we're lucky if Wayne can sleep in till 7:00am} However this morning for some unknown reason I was awake at much earlier time than usual and rather than trying to turn over and go back to sleep I thought I would get up and go for a brisk morning walk. Thankfully before I left I grabbed my camera and I'm ever glad I did. Look at what saw I this morning. A little hoary frost sure can dress up a barren tree. And it always makes evergreens look like Christmas, mind you I am more than ready for spring weather.

Faith or Love

As I've been thinking about my next tattoo, I've been contemplating a Chinese symbol, which according to my son, is very cliche. However I like them, and if I'm going to get another one it should be something I like, shouldn't it?
So faithful readers, which do you prefer?
Faith? or love? I like the idea of of the symbol of faith. It could give me the opportunity to share my faith. On the other hand the love symbol could be a gentle reminder to do just that - love. mmhmm still not sure... . .. maybe I should get both?

Happiness - easy as a,b,c

The word happiness evokes visions of unwrapping gifts on Christmas morning, strolling hand in hand with the one you love, being surprised on your birthday, responding with unbridled laughter to a comedian, or vacationing in a exotic locale. Everyone wants to be happy; we make chasing this elusive ideal a lifelong pursuit: spending money, collecting things, and searching for the new experiences. But if happiness depends on our circumstances, what happens when the toys rust, loved ones die, health deteriorates, money is stolen, and the party's is over? Often happiness flees and despair sets in.

In contrast to happiness stands joy. Running deeper and stronger, joy is the quiet, confidant assurance of God's love and work in our life - that He will be there no matter what! Happiness depends on happenings, but joy depends on Christ.

Simple, really.

You are Special

You Are Special ~ a heartwarming children’s story about a puppet named Punchinello; written by Max Lucado. This story is about The Wemmicks who are small wooden people. Each, carved by a wood carver called 'Eli'. Now there were all kinds of Wemmicks - tall, fat, short, thin, big nosed, small nosed, all sizes and shapes of Wemmicks lived in the village. All day, every day, the Wemmicks did the same thing. They gave each other stickers. Each Wemmick had a box of gold star stickers and a box of grey dot stickers and up and down the streets all over the city, people would be sticking stars or dots on one another. The pretty Wemmicks, the ones with smooth wood and fine paint, they always got stars. The ones that could sing well, the ones that could articulate well, the ones that dressed well, they got stars, but if the wood was rough, if the paint was chipped, the Wemmicks gave them dots. The talented ones always got stars and sometimes Wemmicks had so many stars people would just give them a star because they had so many. Sometimes Wemmicks with so many stars felt so good about themselves that when they saw their stars they would do something great and get another star.

Punchinello was one of the other Wemmicks, those who received only grey dots. He wasn't talented or gifted as the other Wemmicks and people put grey dots all over him all the time. He would try to jump high and he would fall. He would try to skip over the pond and he would fall in the water. People would give him a dot. He would try and explain why he did that but he would mess up and people would give him a grey dot and finally Punchinello hated himself so much that he didn't even want to go outside any more. If he did, he hung around with other Wemmicks that were full of grey dots also. People would see him on the street and say, "He deserves dots" and they would give him a grey dot just because he had so many. They would say, "He isn't a good wooden person" and Punchinello would agree and say, "I am not a good wooden person at all".

One day Punchinello met Lucia and the interesting thing about her was that she had no stars or dots. She was just wooden and it wasn't because people didn't try to give her stickers; it is just that the stickers wouldn't stick. Some admired Lucia for having no dots and because of that they would run up and give her a star but it would fall off. Some would look down on her for having no stars and they would come up and give her a dot. That wouldn't stick either and Punchinello thought 'that's the way it should really be, I don't want anyone's marks' so he asked the sticker less woman how she did it.

She said, "I go to see Eli the wood carver every morning. Eli is the one who made us. You should go and do the same thing. In fact, I told Eli about you and he is waiting for you." Punchinello was horrified and he was sure Eli would never want to see him, but finally he got the courage and went to the wood shop.

The wood carver was so thrilled to see him and told him he had been waiting for him and he looked at Punchinello and said "it looks like they really gave you a lot of bad marks didn't they?" Punchinello tried to apologize and started to make excuses for the many dots all over him. The wood carver said, "You don't have to defend yourself to me child. I don't care what the other Wemmicks think." "You don't," Punchinello said. "No, and you shouldn't either. Who are they to give you either stars or dots? They are Wemmicks, just like you. What they think doesn't matter Punchinello. All that matters is what I think, and I think you’re pretty special."

Eli looked at him and said "you are very special because you are mine, and that is all that matters to me. I made you. Every day I have been hoping that you would come and see me" and Punchinello said, “I came because I met Lucia and she told me about you and I would like to be like that. Why don't the stickers stick on her?" Eli replied, "because she decided that what I think is more important to her than what they think. The stickers only stick if you let them." "What". "The stickers only stick if they matter to you. The more you trust in my love, the less you care about the stickers." For now you just come and see me every day and let me remind you of how much I love you." The wood carver took him off the bench and set him down and said, "remember you are special because I made you and I don't make mistakes." And as Punchinello left the wood carver’s cottage, a dot fell off. The End

Sometimes I need this gentle reminder. All God wants is me, nothing more, nothing less, he doesn't say if I do this or that, then I am good enough to come to Him. Rather He says "come as you are and remember YOU ARE SPECIAL".

Parenting

As a little girl growing up all I ever wanted to be was a mom. Not the most glamorous of jobs but one I wanted nonetheless.

Wayne & I are super blessed to have these three kids.
Darcy, Krystle & Kyle. Of course it's not always been smiles, laughter and fun, there has been heartache, tears and disagreements but through it all there has always been love.

After Krystle married Gerard, and Kyle & Darcy both left for college, I found that my role as a mom drastically changed. It's not been an easy transition. I must admit it has taken time for me to adjust to my new role. And like the photo below suggests about the benefits not kicking in till later, I am definitely "in later" and loving it.

Springtime

This beautiful plaque is on the wall in the entrance room to my home. It serves as a gentle reminder that seasons come and seasons go. Each having their benefits and drawbacks. With the passing of each season, I like to take a moment to be thankful for the old season and for the new one to begin.

We celebrated the "official" first day of spring by going to the Fort Rose Maple Company for the delicious all you can eat pancake brunch. Of course no visit is complete without the purchase of maple syrup.

ahhh, spring! love it!

St. Patrick's Day

Other than an excuse to drink green beer I do not understand the big deal about this day. So I decided to check with google for some info and this is what I found.
For starters, the real St. Patrick wasn't even Irish. He was born in Britain around A.D. 390 to an aristocratic Christian family with a townhouse, a country villa, and plenty of slaves. What's more, Patrick professed no interest in Christianity as a young boy. At 16, Patrick's world turned: He was kidnapped and sent overseas to tend sheep as a slave in the chilly, mountainous countryside of Ireland for seven years. It's said that got a religious conversion while he was there and became a very deeply believing Christian. According to folklore, a voice came to Patrick in his dreams, telling him to escape. He found passage on a pirate ship back to Britain, where he was reunited with his family. The voice then told him to go back to Ireland. He gets ordained as a priest from a bishop, and goes back and spends the rest of his life trying to convert the Irish to Christianity. Patrick's work in Ireland was tough — he was constantly beaten by thugs, harassed by the Irish royalty, and admonished by his British superiors. After he died on March 17, 461, Patrick was largely forgotten. But slowly, mythology grew around Patrick, and centuries later he was honored as the patron saint of Ireland. According to St. Patrick's Day lore, Patrick used the three leaves of a shamrock to explain the Christian holy trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Today, St. Patrick's Day revelers wear a shamrock out of tradition which dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

Though they may not know it, thousands of people today are celebrating the man who brought Christianity to Ireland. It's the only national holiday that celebrates a missionary.

In honor of St. Patrick, celebrate him today by praying for (and supporting) missions

She-she

Having never heard of a 'she-she' party, I was super excited when Krystle invited me to one. It's a home party, (something like Tupperware) except it's purses, jewelery and scarves, oh my! Can one really have to many?

While most of the articles were gorgeous, nothing screamed at us to be bought, so we simply thanked the hostess and went on our merry way. As we headed back to the apt. we took a little detour and treated ourselves to Soy Chai Tea Latte from Coffee Culture..... mmhm super yum!

What a perfect way to end the wonderful time spent with my girl.

3.14

March 14 or 3.14 or the numerical symbol for pi ~ which according to wikipedia is 'a mathematical constant whose value is the ratio of any Euclidean plane circle's circumference to is diameter; this is same value of the ratio to the circle's area to the square radius. It is approximately equal to 3.14159265 in the usual decimal notation. Many formulae from mathematics, science, and engineering involve π, which makes it one of the most important mathematical constants.'

If one were to mix math & music this could be the result.

Happy pi day {3.14}

sweet dreams

Why does losing that extra hour sleep seem so despicable? Is it because insomnia is reaching epidemic proportions? Did it start, when the day became divided into equal amounts of day and night? Or how about with the introduction of artificial lighting? We have been marching zombie-like, arms outstretched, eyes half shut, toward a 24/7 world of shift work, non-stop stress and all-night shopping channels. And then wonder why a large segment of the Canadian population over the age of 15 meet the criteria for insomnia. It's disturbing the number of sleeping pill prescriptions {42 million} that were filled in 2005 and it's up 60% since 2000. A few hints to help you sleep:
* dim the lights before bed - two hours ahead in possible while you do something relaxing {listen to music, take a bath}
* keep a regular wake-up and bedtime schedule
* make sleep a priority. banish all electronics - the television, computer, smartphone - from the bedroom
* and if you must get up in the night for that 'call of nature' do not turn on an overhead light as that can disrupt the body clock.

And if all that fails I guess the final solution would be to purchase a $93,000.00 {not a typo} Hastens' Vividus king-size mattress made of horse hair that's been harvested from black stallions from Argentina. Because according to Nicolas Vardon the sales associate at the Hastens store "you won't feel like you're in a bed, it will feel like you're floating."

Sleep well, my friends

Skype with Spike

Remember that cartoon back in the 60's called the Jetson's. Well neither do I, >.< except that it played though re-runs during the 70's. It was this "space-age" cartoon family sitcom projecting their lifestyle into another time period. The Jetsons lived in a futuristic utopia in the year 2062 with elaborate robotic contraptions, aliens, holograms, and whimsical inventions.

It all seemed so futuristic with their moving sidewalks, flying aerocars and videophone. And yet here we some 50 years later with a few of these "futuristic" things already in place. The videophone or as we call it SKYPE is one such item that I certainly appreciate.

Having Kyle {spike} so far from home while he's at school has taken time to get adjusted to. Since he moved in September I've only seem him about 4 times when he was able to get home for different holidays. Needless to say, I am so thankful for SKYPE. It gives us that opportunity to not only chat with each other but for me to see him as well; and tonight we spent about an hour visiting together. Sure we could just talk on the phone but seeing him, somehow, makes all the difference.

Walking along.....

It's something I enjoy.... daily. With my trusted little puppy, Sasha, we'll walk our way down the side-road thoroughly enjoying our time together. Even leaving our mark in the snow on the road. With the cold crisp air and clear blue skies, I find these days are absolutely beautiful. It gives me a great opportunity to think and often helps in the processing of all those ideas, opinions and thoughts that come to my mind. It helps me take all the memorable moments and clearly see them for what they are and to appreciate all the blessings I have in my life. I tend to like the solitude of walking down a country side-road with no cars to disturb me. I find that I am able to deeply think about all the little things in life, which in turn helps me blog more about what's on my mind.

Blogging for me has become a way to express myself more clearly and perhaps seem more outgoing. It’s a place where it does not matter if I can’t immediately find the right words, a place where I can delete and restate what I really want to say, without stumbling over my words.

So as I continue to walk along through this journey of life, may I have the courage to "be who I am and blog what I think."

A day to rest

Wayne is making the drive to Orillia and back on his own; allowing me a day to rest. He's either being very gracious or he just wants an excuse to drive the santa fe - see this post for the story. Having both boys home for their college reading week breaks has made this week a little busier than usual. More meals were made, more laundry was washed, more cleaning was needed to keep the house tidy, more laundry, more dishes were washed, and did I mention there was more laundry ^.^

Needless to say it was not quite the same restful week for me as it was for them. Don't misunderstand, I don't resent them being home, in fact it's quite the opposite. I have absolutely loved them being home and will definitely miss them when their gone. It'll likely take a few days to get back into our own routine again.

Dictionary.com describes rest as {noun} ~ refreshing ease or inactivity after exertion or labor: to allow an hour for rest; relief or freedom, especially from anything that wearies, troubles, or disturbs. {verb} ~ to refresh oneself, as by sleeping, lying down, or relaxing; to be at ease; have tranquillity or peace.

It's good to take time and just rest, whether your napping, relaxing with a good book, or even blogging. I'm thankful that today I can do just that.

Family

Before the boys head back to college after their reading week break, I invited Meme & Papa, and Krystle & Gerard over for dinner. Tonight we enjoyed baked ham, scalloped potatoes, buttered onions & green beans, cheesy butternut squash, Caesar broccoli slaw and caramel chocolate cake. I even brought out the good china; Royal Albert bone china 'lavender rose'. The evening was filled with good conversation, great games and oodles of laughs.

Time spent with family is always such a wonderful treasure!

Hot Wheels

Well we did it! We bought a brand new 2011 Hyundai Sante Fe. "They say 'the only difference between men and boys is the price of their toys!'" With the price of gas these days we felt we needed something with better gas mileage AND something that we wouldn't have to mortgage the farm each time we had to fill it with gas. I found this photo on facebook and couldn't resist sharing it.

Good-bye avalanche; I will miss you.

Noteworthy Blogs

Yes it must be said, I am a blog-a-holic. I have several blogs that I follow with great regularity. Check 'my blog list' on the side bar to see those I've listed. My addiction probably started with this blog which led me me to this blog, which led me to this blog. But it doesn't stop there , oh no, I've got many more I check... daily. This blog led me to this blog. And the author of this blog got me hooked on this blog which led me to this blog. These however are only a small fraction of the blogs I check.

Sadly enough I could and do spend alot of time checking these blogs for updates and I find myself getting caught up with their stories and daily activities. Sometimes while reading these blogs I get intimated, I feel I don't write or express myself as eloquently as some of these. In fact some of my posts will sit in the Que for a few days while I process the writing of my thoughts out in my head. Blogging is something I enjoy doing. I realize that probably alot of it is not relevant to many, but for me, it's my way of getting all those ideas, thoughts, and opinions out of my head. And yes, I do love it when people comment. Each time a note pops in my inbox informing me of a comment on my blog, I get super excited and immediately go to my blog to read it.

I think, therefore I blog.

A new month....

.... a new chance. I love the 1st day of each month. It's a chance at a fresh start ... again! Too often I get caught up in the fact that new chances or changes can only happen on New Year's Day. It makes me think that I have to stay in the mold or rut I am in because it's not a 'new year', only a new day. But that's just it isn't it. It IS a NEW day. We're given a fresh chance everyday to become a better person than we were the day before. Living out our lives day to day can be pretty monotonous; doing what we've always done. Why is it then, we are so astonished to get the same end result as before? Seems kind of obvious, doesn't it? If you want different end results you need to make some changes. But what to change? Where to start? I posted that we're in the midst of what feel like a crossroad, not sure which way to turn. Not wanting to go the wrong way, we hesitate to make that first step. So we've taken that first step {in faith} that this is where we are to go and what we are to do. I guess we'll find out soon enough if that's "the one less traveled by", and see if "that has made all the difference". "quoted from 'the road not taken' by Robert Frost"
